Taster Day programme

Here's what happened at the Environmental Sciences Taster day in March 2024.

We're excited to meet you. Check in, grab a refreshment and get ready to learn about studying a degree in Environmental Sciences at uni.

Here's our guide to subject taster days, should you want to learn a little more about our taster days before booking.

We'll meet from 9.00am at King Henry Building, Portsmouth PO1 2DY.

Dr Mark Hardiman highlights the importance of environmental studies, exploring different career options available to you as well as the diverse number of specialist degree opportunities we offer at the University of Portsmouth.

You'll see how different degrees focused on the environment can make you a change-maker and, with agency to shape the future of the world for the better.

Geography & Biology

Observe coastal change through high-powered microscopes to understand how sea-levels have changed on the south coast over the last 6,000 years via microscopic fossil marine organisms.

*Note: this is 1 of 4 sessions running at this time:

  • Seeing sea-level change through a microscope – Geography & Biology
  • Managing our coastlines into the future – Geography
  • Ocean Bounty: Estimating Marine Populations– Marine Biology
  • All about water – Environmental Science & Marine Environmental Science

You'll attend any 1 of these sessions during this particular timeslot, but you'll get to see all 4 talks over the course of the day.

Quick breather. Take stock of the morning then get ready for the next session.

Geography

Consider different people's perspectives as you map and understand the different ecological and human pressures on the coastline of Portsmouth and the Solent. Working in a group, you'll also look for ways to best promote an environmentally sustainable future.

You'll attend any 1 of these sessions during this particular timeslot, but you'll get to see all 4 talks over the course of the day.

Marine Biology

Explore the fascinating world of marine ecology by using beans as a stand-in for ocean creatures, as you get hands-on to learn how scientists estimate population sizes and the importance of sample size for accurate marine conservation efforts.

*Note: this is 1 of 4 sessions running at this time:
